Paul Murton explores the upper reaches of the Spey, Scotland’s third-longest river, from its source in the wilds of Badenoch to Broomhill, halfway down. He hears stories of clan chief Cluny Macpherson, who hid with his gold for nine years in an inaccessible cave. Heading to a hidden tributary, Paul discovers a secret aristocratic Victorian love nest located in a remote glen where the wilderness is returning. In Newtonmore, Paul sees traditional Highland houses that remind him of Hobbit dwellings, before he rides a steam train on a heritage railway that follows the Spey.

Traffic Officer Hugh McKirdy becomes starstruck as he and his partner Surjit Singh respond to an incident involving Michelle McManus. They also take us on a tour of the police impound. Having been sure that the Scottish Police Force IT system has been hacked by North Korea, Chief Commissioner Miekelson is both relieved, and a little embarrassed, to discover it was actually the work of the daughter of a woman he was dating. He discusses Freedom of Information before giving an award for bravery then grudgingly receiving an award for public service. Officer McLaren and Fletcher use good police work, and baking skills, to arrest a mobile phone thief, while Maggie LeBeau shows us the Call Centre "Thank You Room" containing gifts from happy customers. Desk Sergeant Karen Ann Millar is surprised by someone in the toilet and helps local man Bobby with his Jury Summons. Volunteer Officer Ken Beattie stands in for a drumming busker and a dodgy tummy won't stop Rural Officers Mackay and McIntosh helping a woman with a break-in at her house.

The lands of the north bloom as nearly 24 hours of daylight transform the snow-clad landscapes. Arctic fox clans struggle to raise their cubs on Iceland’s volcanic shores. On Shetland, it’s time for the otter cub to strike out alone, while a lone puffin also searches out a partner. And in the mountains, tiny reindeer calves take their first steps. Sanjeev Kohli takes a humorous look at how films have shown Scots, the Scots character and stereotypes, celebrating some of our most memorable onscreen moments. Are we really as mean, parochial and up for a fight as the movies often make us out to be? Sanjeev examines which Scottish stereotypes have a whiff of truth and which ones should be fed to the Loch Ness Monster. Packed with great film clips from both famous classics and lesser-known cult gems, the programme features contributions from an impressive supporting cast list, including actors Kate Dickie, Clare Grogan, Gary Lewis, Denis Lawson, Alex Norton and Tam Dean Burn. From popular adaptations of Kidnapped and Rob Roy to war dramas such as The Great Escape, from the wily islanders of Whisky Galore to the dark urban humour of films such as Shallow Grave, we look at what stories these films have told the world about us, and what these characters can teach us about ourselves. We eavesdrop on tourists taking in the sights with an Outlander tour, drawn to visit Scotland through our most expensive ever drama production, and we celebrate an unexpected staple of Scottish cinema: Scottish men crying.

The caravan park owned and run by three generations of the Wallace family plays a big part in the community on the Fife coast. Manager Steven has volunteered at the nearby RNLI station since he was 17 and is on call. A park resident has recently joined a another kind of community - the bay’s wild swimmers - and goes for a dip with friends. Meanwhile, head chef James welcomes a new recruit to the kitchen, and the sun shines on a fund-raising fete.

The animals of the north face worsening weather in autumn and the first stirrings of winter. Grey seals and reindeer turn their attention to mating, hormones run wild as males compete, and young animals venture away from their parents for the first time. In Iceland, the cliff Arctic fox family is thriving, but it’s a different story for the foxes denning at the shoreline. Only one of the cubs has survived. Now, abandoned by her parents, she must fend for herself. On the Monach Isles, 35,000 grey seals arrive for the annual breeding season. A pup faces danger on the beach, getting lost and swept up into a fight between two raging bulls. As winter arrives, the reindeer herd in Norway must migrate to their grazing grounds in the mountains, but this involves a perilous two-mile swim across open water.

Ian Hamilton and his guide dog Major travel to Peterhead, where the North Sea meets hard graft. Built on fishing, and now the home of the biggest fish market in Europe, Peterhead reinvented itself with the arrival of oil and gas but is now looking towards renewables. Ian and Major complain about the early start as they visit the fish market, before Ian plays some crazy golf at a newly renovated town centre park. The pair then head to the harbour to find out about a big new investment in the town, and Ian takes a trip in a fish van around the local area. After a visit to the notorious Peterhead Prison, which is now a museum, Ian finds himself locked away by the crew, but he manages to escape for a peaceful sailing trip to finish his time in the town.

As the episode opens, Michelle and Alan are making the last minute tidy-ups before the neighbours arrive for the housewarming of their freshly decorated home. Beth and Eric are first in the door, followed by Christine wearing an eye patch (from a rogue newspaper eye-scratching incident), with Colin and Cathy not far behind. Cathy is of course not backward in coming forward with less than complimentary comments about the couple’s new-look home. Then in comes Louise, Michelle’s long-term friend, who has unexpectedly come by to drop off a housewarming gift. As Louise is deaf, she and Michelle talk in sign language, further frustrating Cathy’s determination to be the centre of attention.
